Match report by Ashley Willitt

On Saturday night the Bees faced off against local rivals and league topping Basingstoke Bison. Missing Josh Tetlow, who was in action with the Nottingham Panthers, the Bees added Josh Ealey-Newman to the ranks.

In goal for the Bees was Alex Mettam, while Dean Skinns took position between the pipes for the Bison.

The Bees were the better of the two sides from the off, with Ben Ealey-Newman and Danny Ingoldsby causing trouble around the net and bringing the first saves from Skinns. With just over 3 minutes on the clock the Bees got the first goal of the night through a pass from behind the goal line from Frankie Bakrlik to Carl Thompson, whose shot/pass was tipped in front by Josh Martin and past Skinns. For the next few minutes the Bees soaked up Basingstoke pressure. With a hard pass from Shaun Thompson, it was tipped and flew just over the bar by Bakrlik. The Bison had a few good chances of their own with Grant Rounding striking the bar with a great effort. The visitors doubled their lead with 8 minutes remaining after Bakrlik received a stretch pass and, while being fouled, managed to out-manoeuvre Skinns and slip the puck home from a narrow angle. Just 2 minutes later and the Bison pulled back a goal through Ryan Sutton against the run of play. Before the period was out the Bison got their first power-play after Vanya Antonov went down very easily from a challenge from Matt Foord.

With nothing coming from the power-play the Bees once again attacked the Bison net freely into the second period. With another power-play against them killed, Bracknells defence covered former Bee Antonov not allowing him any freedom. Harvey Stead showing a cool head clearing up after Antonov looked odds on to get to a loose puck first and with the Bison forward spilling unceremoniously into the boards.

It was the third period that proved to be the undoing of the Bees. Within the first minute of the game and in less than 30 seconds, the Bison had turned a 1 goal deficit into a 1 goal lead. With goals from Sutton and Tomas Karpov the Bison stepped up a gear, where-as the Bees went into self-destruct. A fourth goal for the Bison on 42 minutes by Roman Malinik lead to a succession of Bees penalties as the visitors lost their heads and failed to rally back into the game. With Mettam doing his best to keep his team in it, Skinns in the Bison net had very little to do, facing just 3 shots in the final period. With just under 2 minutes to play Bracknell pulled Mettam but were unable to gain any advantage with the extra man. Despite a last ditch save by Stead on the empty net, the Bison eventually got their fifth through Rounding.

5-2 it ended with a very poor final period for the Bees, whose discipline let them down against a very well drilled and determined Basingstoke team.
